About Tbilisi State Medical University (TSMU)

Tbilisi State Medical University (TSMU) is one of Georgia’s leading medical universities with a legacy of excellence spanning over 85 years. It was initially founded in 1930 as the Tbilisi State Medical Institute, originating from the Faculty of Medicine at Tbilisi State University (TSU). In 1992, it was transformed into an independent entity and officially renamed Tbilisi State Medical University.

From its inception, TSMU has been a catalyst for medical education and healthcare development in Georgia. The university originally operated with three faculties: Medicinal-Prophylactic (Dental Department), Sanitary-Prophylactic, and Pharmacologic-Chemical. Over time, it expanded with the establishment of additional faculties, including:

  • Pediatrics (1931)

  • Dentistry (1936)

  • Military Medicine (1993)

  • Medical Biology (1994)

  • Psychosomatic Medicine and Psychotherapy (1996)

Today, TSMU proudly offers education across five major faculties: Medicine, Dentistry, Pharmacy, Public Health, and Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation.

TSMU’s Global Standards and Educational Reform

Recognizing the need to align with global educational standards, TSMU embraced significant reforms in the 1990s and early 2000s. In 1997, it introduced a result-oriented learning methodology based on European educational standards and recommendations.

TSMU is a recognized member of key global organizations, including:

  • The European Medical Education Association (AMEE)

  • The World Federation for Medical Education (WFME)

The university not only adheres to international guidelines but also actively contributes to shaping global medical education policies. TSMU emphasizes three core pillars of modern medical education: clinical thinking, information management, and communication skills.

Recent Growth and Achievements

In response to educational reforms and the evolving needs of the healthcare sector, TSMU implemented a three-stage higher education system (Bachelor’s, Master’s, and Doctoral degrees), integrated with postgraduate medical education.

Major milestones include:

  • 2006: Merger with Tbilisi State Medical Academy, combining traditional strengths in undergraduate and postgraduate education.

  • 2007: Integration of the Faculty of Natural Physical Culture and Rehabilitation from the State Physical Culture and Sports Academy.

  • Significant academic expansion, involving over 371 full professors, associate professors, and assistant professors, along with approximately 350 invited lecturers.

These strategic developments have strengthened TSMU’s position as a hub of medical excellence, nurturing future healthcare leaders from Georgia and around the world.
